New video: Bach's sonatas for viola da gamba as trio sonatas
In October 2023 I spent a few days in Palermo, playing a concert in Monreale and visiting old friends. Not only did I enjoy some lovely summery days, but I also participated in a small project initiated by my friend Marco Lo Cicero, a double bass and viola da gamba player, who had wanted for a long time to perform Bach’s gamba sonatas as a string trio. Together with our friend and cello player Jonathan Pešek we recorded some movements from the first two sonatas in a beautiful palazzo in the center of Palermo.
The music works remarkably well in this combination: the violin and the cello can almost always just play the right and left hand of the harpsichord without making any changes. The three string instruments blend together beautifully, and there is no danger that one of them is overpowered by the other.
So far, one movement has been published on Youtube; more is about to come.
