Musikalische Wellness: Leclair Duos

Musikalische Wellness is a concert series created by Andrea Marcon and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel which consists of repeated performances for a very small audience (max. 5p) in La Cetra’s new Studio MusicArte. Players from the orchestra as well as guests musicians get the opportunity to perform solo or very small chamber music works parallel to a small exhibition with paintings that fit the theme of the series.
In the spring series of 2022, themed “Women”, I performed three violin duos by Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) together with my colleague Katharina Heutjer. We have been two of the leaders of La Cetra for some years, but we never performed in this constellation before. It was a great pleasure!

Leclair’s duos are perfectly designed to create the fullest sound possible, even without a bass instrument. The whole range of the violin is used and frequent double stops enhance the ensemble sound. The two parts are equally interesting and virtuosic which makes these pieces very attractive for any violinist - however, they are not performed very often on stage.
